What Do I Do Next?
You’re not my "real" mom!
Why did you adopt me?
Why didn’t my birth mom keep (want) me?
When will my skin turn white, like yours?

These questions are timeless really. Adoptees of all ages think about them and if you're a lucky adoptive parent, your child will actually ask them out loud.

Parenting through adoption is different than parenting birth children. The love we have for them is not different. The midnight feedings, scraped knees and piano recitals are not different. What is different is that children born into their family NEVER have to wonder who they look like, or why their birth mother didn’t parent them when they were so little.

"What could I have done that was so bad that my mom didn’t want me?"

Adopted children are seen as "special" or "chosen" or even "lucky." And they are! They are special because we love them, and we did choose them, or at least chose to adopt. Some children who would otherwise face a life of institutionalization and poverty, are lucky to have a family. However some children don't like feeling special, chosen or lucky. They want to be "normal, "whatever that is?
Our job is to educate you about the life long issues in adoption, not just how to get the baby into your loving arms. Our experienced staff has worked with all types of adoptive families, adoptees of all ages and the birth parents who make the ultimate sacrifice. The Adoptive Parent Training helps lay the foundation for families who are beginning the adoption process. We will give you the tools to get started and the information you need to get you through some of the tough questions.
Your training includes:
Moving from infertility treatments to adoption
Attachment and bonding with adopted infants and toddlers
Loss in Adoption – How it effects us all
Birth parent counseling, relinquishment process and the placement ceremony
Open Adoption and what that really means
Institutionalization and it’s effects on health, adjustment and development
Facing the inevitable risks and unknowns of adoption
Learning from those who forged the path. An adoptive parent panel will provide support, insight and their personal stories of their own adoption journey
Our caring staff looks forward to learning from you and sharing our years of experience in a relaxed and supportive environment. Working as partners, this training will start you on the right foot, as you prepare to bring your child into your heart and home.
